the move, part 3

It's 5:43am on Tuesday 2/20 and it's finally done! The lock is closed and everything is in the ReloCube. My original flight out of here was supposed to be Friday 2/16, but through a series of unfortunate events, plans changed.

First, a crazy ice storm passed through the area on Tuesday. In a matter of a few hours, every surface was covered in a perfect mold of ice. It was very cool, and also very annoying. It made driving anywhere awful, and loading stuff was impossible. We rescheduled the flight to NYC from Friday to Sunday so i could still make it to my dad's 50th birthday party. Well, Saturday evening I got an email from JetBlue informing me that all flights out of Pittsburgh have been canceled through Monday. Panic set in and I quickly reserved a flight on United. At about 4am on Sunday, we realized that we weren't going to finish in time for our 10:30am flight. What to do? Nap for 3 hours, fly to NYC, and come back to Pittsburgh of course!

So we were in and out of NYC for less than 24 hours. My dad's party was good in that "lots of old russian people in a loud russian restaurant" sort of way. I saw my aunt and cousin who I haven't seen in at least 3 years. Alex got to meet or at least see the rest of my clan, and we ate a lot. Didn't drink as much as we should've though, but we had slept for 3 hours for 2 nights before so we were effectively drunk without the alcohol.

We got back to the pits at 1pm on Monday, canceled our JetBlue flight to San Jose, and rebooked for wednesday morning. We figured we'd be done packing by midnight and get lots of sleep and have all of Tuesday to clean the apartment. It's now 5;50am, and we're just going to bed...

All that matters is that it's done. Tomorrow ABF will pick up the relocube and I'll be off to Cali! Yay!

(pictures of the ice storm and the party should be up on my flickr soon)

moving, part 2

Most of the furniture is gone and I'm sleeping on an aerobed, but the move still doesn't feel real. There are a hundred tiny little things lying around that need to be packed. This week will be very hectic. Besides finishing packing, Alex and I need to clean the apartment and redo some of our "renovations," i.e. replacing nasty yellowed light cover switches with beautiful brushed steel ones, changing the shower head from our nice one to the original one which sort of dribbles some water on you, etc...

Yesterday we went to the Waterfront (for possibly the last time) to get the aerobed and some other supplies. I stopped by Victoria's Secret b/c I had a coupon, and I needed a bra to wear with a new dress for my dad's birthday next week. I needed a bra with a low back so that the clasp doesn't show. Well I got one but it's so super complicated! It comes with an instruction booklet! The straps can be made into a halter or an x-cross or probably a few dozen other things. It took the sales girl 5 minutes to explain it to me and tweak the "settings" before I could try it on.

Then we had an awful dinner at Rock Bottom, which is too bad b/c our previous experiences there were pretty good. I'm not going to miss dining out in Pittsburgh. The food is mediocre, even at the "good" restaurants, and the service is laughable.

...more packing today!

my new "job"

My new job is managing craigslist responses to my furniture ad. I've received a dozen or so replies for all the furniture I'm selling. I'm not sure, but I believe I invited about 10 people to stop by tonight to look at all the stuff. Having dealt with craigslist before, I expect maybe 2, at most 3 people to actually follow through.

The hardest items to sell will be the couch and mattress. The mattress in particular since I'd like to keep it till the last possible minute. Oh well.

last lonely weekend

The title says it all: this is my last weekend alone in Pittsburgh or otherwise. Next weekend Alex will be here, the weekend after that we'll both be in NYC, and then we'll be in California. Yay! I really can't wait to get out of here, and most importantly, to rejoin Alex. But to prevent myself from getting too dramatic about my time alone, I've compiled this list of things I that I enjoy that will be more difficult to do when Alex and I share our domicile again.

Things I will miss from all my free time alone:

  • watching all the Law & Order (SVU) that I want
  • eating just a salad for dinner
  • putting garlic into everything
  • putting nail polish on in the bedroom
  • watching SG-1 as much as I can
(Deja vu... did I already post a similar list?)

(the list may be edited if I think of anything else)
